“When I becomes We,
When Him or Her becomes Us,
When My becomes Our,
And when the Individual becomes the Collective,
Then the boss begins to sit up and take notice!”

“Rise like lions after slumber,
In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth, like dew,
Which in sleep had fallen on you –
Ye are many they are few!”

Tuesday, 18 November 2008

Ahead of the pre-budget report, Unite the union will present Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling with ten key priorities - including a freeze on home repossessions - as part of the government's actions to invest its way out of the credit crunch and kick-start the faltering economy.

The submission, entitled "A new deal for the real economy" from the two million member strong union seeks to protect working people from the triple danger of redundancy, repossession and rising prices.

The union's priorities include; a freeze on repossessions on homes and the creation of one million new affordable homes, the introduction of a fair tax regime, an increase in public spending and support for manufacturing through procurement and investment. The submission also calls for a new order of regulation in the finance sector.

UPS is actively trying to win DHL US express customers at the same time as negotiating a deal to take over North American uplift for DHL.

Safety Representatives-A charter for change
Tuesday, 21 October 2008

October 2008

When Lord Robens produced his report on health and safety in the workplace, one of the principles that underpinned the report was the belief that the involvement of the workforce is crucial to achieving good standards of health and safety, and that health and safety systems work best when trade unions and employers work together. That philosophy also underpinned the Health and Safety at Work Act, with its legal backing of union safety representatives and the establishment of an equal voice for unions and employers on the, then, HSC.

It has been repeatedly demonstrated in studies from a range of countries that worker activity, with union support behind it, is a major factor in reducing injuries and disease at work. Statistics show that better standards of health and safety are achieved in unionised workplaces than in similar non-unionised ones. At the core of this are Safety Representatives. This report will show how safety representatives make a difference in practice and how shortcomings in the present regulations limit their effectiveness.
