Transport workers at Fedex in South Africa, who walked out on strike earlier this month, have won a significant pay deal.
The workers, represented by the ITF-affiliated South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu), took strike action across South Africa on 7 September after managers refused to consider their demand for an 11 per cent pay increase, offering only eight per cent. However, following negotiations on 16 September in Meadowdale, Fedex managers agreed to a 10 per cent across the board wage rise, a settlement that the workers were happy to accept. The agreement also included a 12 per cent shift allowance, along with a 14 per cent shift allowance increase from 1 July 2010.
